Kesesuaian Subyek-Verba Penting dalam Bahasa Inggris

Workshop for English

bahasa inggris, belajar bahasa inggris, belajar subject-verb agreement,

Tunggal:           That apple looks like a Gala.

Jamak:             Those apples look like Galas.

Tunggal:           There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

Jamak:             There were old women who lived in a shoe.

X  The cost of all the repairs we needed to make were more than we could afford.

The cost of all the repairs we needed to make was more than we could afford.

2.      Kasus misterius dari there is dan there was: Jumlah kesalahan subject-verb yang mengejutkan melibatkan kalimat yang mulai dengan there is atau there was.

X  There is usually some leftovers in the freezer.

There are usually some leftovers in the freezer.

X  Good planning and careful execution is necessary for success.

Verbanya bentuk tunggal, tetapi subyek majemuk yang digabung dengan and memerlukan verba jamak:

Good planning and careful execution are necessary for success.

The first two chapters of the book were exciting.

The size of the bears startles the spectators.

Subjek tunggal yang diikuti oleh ungkapan seperti with, together with, accompanied by, dan as well as mengambil verba tunggal.

FAULTY         The coach, as well as the players, were happy over the victory.

REVISED       The coach, as well as the players, was happy over the victory.

Kata ganti tak tentu another, each, either, neither, dan one selalu mengambil verba tunggal.

Everybody in the audience was enthusiastic.

Another of the pesticides has proved harmful to birds.

Each of the students needs individual help.

Neither of the books was available in the library.

Kata ganti tak tentu all, any, most, more, none, dan some mungkin mengambil salah satu verba tunggal atau jamak tergantung pada nomina mereka merujuk.

Some of the silver is missing. [Some merujuk ke nomina tunggal silver.]

Some of the ancestors were farmers. [Some merujuk ke nomina jamak ancestors.]

None of the work is finished. [None merujuk ke bentuk tunggal work.]

None of the birds have migrated yet. [None merujuk ke bentuk jamak birds.]

A dog and a cat are seldom friends.

The Ohio River and the Missouri River empty into the Mississippi.

My friend and benefactor was there to help me.

4. Ketika konjungsi or dan nor dan pasangan kata sambung either ... or, neither ... nor, dan not only ... but also digunakan untuk menggabungkan subyek, verba berkesesuaian dalam jumlah dengan bagian subyek yang terdekat verba tersebut.

Either the dean or her assistant was to have handled the matter.

Either you or he has to be there.

Neither the farmer nor the chickens were aware of the swooping hawk.

There are no trees in our yard.

[There adalah ekspletif. Subyeknya adalah trees: No trees are in our yard.]

On this question, there remains no doubt.

[Subyeknya adalah doubt: No doubt remains on this question.]

Buried under the froorboards is the murdered man. [Subyeknya adalah man. The murdered man is buried under the froorboards.]

There is [or are] only a chair and a table left to auction. [Subyeknya adalah majemuk a chair and a table.]

Kalimat semacam ini terbaik ditulis kembali:

Only a chair and a table are left to auction.

Dalam beberapa kalimat yang mulai dengan adverbia here dan there atau dengan grup kata adverbia, verba datang sebelum subyek.

There goes the man I was describing. [There adalah adverbia. Subyeknya adalah nomina man.]

Up the trail race the motorcycles. [Subyeknya adalah motorcycles.]

In the chinks between the bricks grows moss. [Subyeknya adalah moss.]

After winning a big victory come the postgame letdown and fatigue. [Subyek majemuk letdown and fatigue, memerlukan verba jamak.]

Alat bantu untuk menentukan kesesuaian subyek-verba yang benar adalah menyusun kembali kalimat tersebut ke dalam tatanan normal, sehingga subyek hadir duluan: Moss grows in the chinks between the bricks. The postgame letdown and fatigue come after winning a big victory.

Our family goes out to dinner weekly. [Family bertindak bersama sebagai unit tunggal.]

The family have been arriving all morning. [Anggota keluarga tiba pada waktu yang berbeda.]

The committee is meeting today. [Verba tunggal is menekankan committee bertindak sebagai sebuah unit.]

The committee are unable to agree on a plan. [Verba jamak are menekankan anggota committee bertindak secara terpisah.]

7. Ketika pronomina relatif who, which, dan that digunakan sebagai subyek, gunakan verba tunggal ketika antesedennya adalah tunggal, verba jamak ketika antesedennya adalah jamak.

They are the employees who deserve praise. [Who merujuk ke nomina jamak employees; jadi verbanya jamak.]

The book that was lost belonged to the library. [That merujuk ke nomina tunggal book; jadi verbanya tunggal.]

Frasa “one of the” sering menyebabkan masalah dalam kalimat semacam ini.

Sanderson is one of the council members who oppose the plan. [Who merujuk ke bentuk jamak members; several council members oppose the plan.]

Sanderson is the only one of the council members who opposes the plan.

Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean play.

Songs and Satires is a book by Edger Lee Masters.

Women is the plural of woman. [a word used as a word]

Mathematics has always been my downfall.

The financial news was favorable last month.

Three-quarters of the money is already spent.

Forty years is a long time to live in one town.

Four miles is too much to jog.

Forty percent of the trees were damaged by the hurricane. [Pohon-pohon itu rusak secara terpisah.]

One-half of the students have finished the examination. [Para murid menyelesaikan secara individual.]

Ungkapan “the number of” mengambil verba tunggal, tetapi “a number of” mengambil verba jamak. The number merujuk ke jumlah total sedangkan a number merujuk ke unit individual.

The number of candidates for the position was large.

A number of the candidates were applying for the position.

The number of people moving to the Southwest is increasing.

A number of business firms have moved from New York.

11. Buatlah verba berkesesuaian setelah ungkapan jumlah

Masalah kesesuaian yang khusus terjadi ketika subyek adalah ungkapan jumlah, seperti all, most, atau some, yang diikuti oleh preposisi of. Dalam situasi ini, subyek (all, most, atau some) dapat berupa tunggal atau jamak, tergantung pada apa yang mengikuti preposisi of.

All (of the book) was interesting.

All (of the books) were interesting.

All (of the information) was interesting.

Dalam contoh pertama, subyek All merujuk ke nomina tunggal book. Dalam contoh kedua, subyek All merujuk ke nomina jamak books, jadi verba yang benar adalah verba jamak were. Dalam contoh ketiga, subyek All merujuk ke nomina tak dapat dihitung information, jadi verba yang benar oleh karenanya verba tunggal was.

Strategi Memecahkan Masalah Verba

Contohnya:

present tense, subyek orang ke-3 tunggal      verba be berkesesuaian dengan subyek

Josh loves chocolate.                                       I am surprised that you said that.

She mows the lawn on Saturday.                     Jack is making the punch.

                                                                        We are baking brownies.

                                                                        John was absent.

They were frightened by the storm.

e.g.: The researchers been conducting an experiment here for a long time. [salah]

The researchers have been conducting an experiment here for a long time. [benar]

2.      Jangan gabung bagian-bagian verba secara keliru.

e.g.: He have never been late to school before. [salah]

He has never been late to school before. [benar]

3.      Yakinkan bentuk verba sesuai dengan penanda waktu.

e.g.: He finishes his study at 7:30 last night. [salah]

He finished his study at 7:30 last night. [benar]

4.      Hati-hati dalam membentuk verba yang tak beraturan.

e.g.:  The professor writed the answers on the blackboard so everyone could see. [salah]

The professor wrote the answers on the blackboard so everyone could see. [benar]

5.      Hati-hati dalam membentuk kalimat pasif secara keliru.

e.g.: The answer was knew by most of the class. [salah]

The answer was known by most of the class. [benar]

6.      Hati-hati dalam menggunakan verba kausatif.

e.g.: The professor had the assignment submit by Monday. [salah]

The professor had the assignment submitted by Monday. [benar]

7.      Hati-hati dalam menggunakan present participle/bentuk –ING dari verba (tanpa be) atau past participle (tanpa have/has atau be) ketika bentuk verba tentu (finite) diperlukan.

e.g.: George having had his paper finished for a few days. [salah]

George has had his paper finished for a few days. [benar]

8.      Yakinkan verba yang digunakan berkesesuaian dengan subyek.

e.g.: Behind the trees are the new faculty building. [salah]

Behind the trees is the new faculty building. [benar]

Catatan:

e.    g.: Beyond the sky are many things to discover.

                                  V         S

b.      apositif tidak dapat menjadi subyek.

e.    g.: Mr. Harrison, the Dean of the faculty, is attending a conference.

               S                                                      V

c.       verba dibalik tatanannya setelah kata tanya, ekspresi negatif, kondisi tanpa if, dan perbandingan.

e.    g.: She is better than are any other students in the class.

                                       V           S

Were I you, I wouldn’t do that. (Were I you = if I were you)

           V        S

Hardly had she begun to speak, when there was a shout from the

                          V     S

back of the hall.

e.g.:  No one is happy with the decision.

            S        V

There was a dearth of fresh food.

                                      V       S
